Thirty-seven miles from Chicago and miles from O’Hare Airport sit the village of Lake Zurich. This small town in Lake County, Illinois is one of many Chicago suburbs. At the start of the st century, the government of Lake Zurich began to wish for a decrease in the number of motor vehicles that were passing through the village’s downtown area. Thus, the Lake Zurich Redevelopment Agency initiated work on the revitalization of the village’s downtown section. One major focus of that revitalization would be the creation of a Route by-pass. Then all of the traffic not going directly into Lake Zurich would be channeled off onto an alternate route.

The decision to have a revitalization of the downtown served to underline the changes that have taken place in Lake Zurich. Lake Zurich began as a market center for the residents of the rural areas around Chicago. The first settlers in Lake Zurich arrived in the s. The economic benefits that resulted from the proximity of the Chicago Worlds Fair of helped to spur the growth of Lake Zurich. The village became incorporated on September , .

Somehow, the haphazard nature of the village’s growth seemed unimportant until the end of the th century. Then the people of Lake Zurich began to pay attention to the need for the repair of old streets and the demolition of dilapidated buildings. The residents of Lake Zurich supported the revitalization efforts proposed by the city government. They looked forward to the planting of trees along walkways in the downtown district of Lake Zurich. Bike riders eagerly anticipated the creation of new bike paths.

Now that the downtown revitalization has begun in earnest, the residents of Lake Zurich have reason to expect a future downtown with many new businesses. They already see evidence of the new retail buildings and new office space that should contribute to the effort to restore some of the old quaintness of downtown Lake Zurich.

The residents of Lake Zurich now see the unfolding of a revitalization effort that promises to transform the downtown section into a more desirable place to shop and visit. Some of the residents might already be making plans to later move-in to one of the new residences currently being constructed in the downtown of Lake Zurich.
