Ward started his football career at Forest Park High School in Georgia. During his high school days he displayed great athleticism from his quarterback position which led him to being named the Offensive Player of the Year in Clay County for both his junior and senior seasons. After high school Ward decided to take his game to the University of Georgia. Although he played many positions in college, Ward was primarily used as a wide receiver.
